The facts
What sepiolite actually is
The species behind sepiolite is a fibrous hydrated magnesium silicate clay; the massive nodular form is the classic pipe-carving meerschaum, while the bulk mineral is an industrial absorbent and rheology additive, Mg4Si6O15(OH)2.6H2O; it forms in the orthorhombic (fibrous) system.
White to cream; the prized meerschaum patina is tobacco tar staining, developed deliberately over years of smoking is responsible for the colour — and the chromophore, not the name, is what decides whether a colour is stable.
On the instruments it reads a refractive index of 1.50-1.53 and a specific gravity of about 2.00-2.30 (dry meerschaum floats on water, hence 'sea foam'), with none in the massive form cleavage.
Where sepiolite comes from
Commercial material comes from Eskisehir, Turkiye - the world's classic meerschaum district and the source of virtually all carving grade, Vallecas and Vicalvaro, Madrid, Spain - the dominant industrial sepiolite producer, Amboseli, Kenya (a lower-grade carving material sold as African meerschaum) and Nevada and Utah, USA.
Different localities give different colour and different clarity, and the trade prices them differently. We state which one.
How sepiolite is treated
Carving meerschaum is soaked, carved wet, dried, then waxed with beeswax. LEGAL AND COMMERCIAL: Turkiye has for decades restricted the export of unprocessed meerschaum blocks in order to protect the domestic carving industry, so legitimate raw blocks are scarce and 'meerschaum' pipes made from pressed meerschaum dust and binder are extremely common and should be disclosed. Industrial sepiolite is used for cat litter, rheology control in paints and drilling fluids, animal feed pellet binding, and absorbents. Fibrous habit means dust control is sensible.
We state the treatment on every stone, including when the honest answer is that it cannot be determined. A treatment disclosed is a fact; a treatment discovered later is a refund.
What sepiolite is confused with
Watch for Pressed meerschaum (reconstituted dust and binder) sold as block meerschaum, Palygorskite / attapulgite, Kaolin and Plaster and resin imitation pipes — these are what turn up sold under this name.
The separation is rarely a matter of opinion: refractive index 1.50-1.53 and specific gravity 2.00-2.30 (dry meerschaum floats on water, hence 'sea foam') settle most of it in a minute, and magnification settles the rest.
What sepiolite is used for
The trades that buy sepiolite are carving and sculpture, heavy industry, filtration, decorative objects and mineral collecting. They do not want the same thing, and they do not pay in the same unit.
We quote each application in the unit that trade actually buys in, by the block, by the tonne or by the piece.
Durability and care
Sepiolite is 2-2.5 on the Mohs scale, with none in the massive form cleavage.
Below about 5.5 a stone will be scratched by ordinary household dust, which is largely quartz. That does not make it unusable — it makes it a pendant, an earring or an object rather than a ring worn every day.
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners on anything fracture-filled, stabilised, dyed or visibly included.
What sepiolite costs
Expect roughly $100-400 per tonne industrial; block meerschaum pipes $80-600, master-carved antique examples far higher, depending on quality.
That is a range, not a quote. Colour, size, clarity, cut and origin move the figure a long way inside it, and the only honest price is one given against a specific stone. Send us what you need and we will price it.
Questions
Is sepiolite treated, and how?
Where does sepiolite come from?
Eskisehir, Turkiye - the world's classic meerschaum district and the source of virtually all carving grade, Vallecas and Vicalvaro, Madrid, Spain - the dominant industrial sepiolite producer, Amboseli, Kenya (a lower-grade carving material sold as African meerschaum) and Nevada and Utah, USA. Origin affects price, so we name the locality rather than the country on every quote.
Is sepiolite hard enough to wear every day?
Not really. At 2-2.5 on the Mohs scale it is softer than the quartz dust in ordinary household dirt, so it scratches with wear. It suits pendants, earrings and objects better than a daily ring.
How much does sepiolite cost?
Indicatively $100-400 per tonne industrial; block meerschaum pipes $80-600, master-carved antique examples far higher. Colour, size, clarity and origin move the price a long way within that, so treat it as a range and ask for a quote against a specific stone.
What is sepiolite confused with?
Most often Pressed meerschaum (reconstituted dust and binder) sold as block meerschaum, Palygorskite / attapulgite, Kaolin and Plaster and resin imitation pipes. A refractive index of 1.50-1.53 and a specific gravity near 2.00-2.30 (dry meerschaum floats on water, hence 'sea foam') separate it quickly.
What is sepiolite used for besides jewellery?
carving and sculpture, heavy industry, filtration, decorative objects and mineral collecting. Each of those trades buys it in a different form and a different unit.
