Natural Graphite

The soft, layered, electrically conductive polymorph of carbon; supplied as flake, vein (lump) or microcrystalline (misleadingly called amorphous) · C · Mohs 1-2

Also sold as: Flake graphite, amorphous graphite, plumbago, black lead

In short

Natural Graphite is the gem and ornamental form of the soft, layered, electrically conductive polymorph of carbon; supplied as flake, vein (lump) or microcrystalline (misleadingly called amorphous), C, and sits at 1-2 on the Mohs scale. Its colour comes from iron-black to steel-grey with a metallic lustre and a black streak; greasy to the touch. Heilongjiang, Shandong and Inner Mongolia, China - dominant world production is the source that matters commercially. Flotation-concentrated, then for battery use micronised, spheroidised and coated - spherical graphite for anodes wastes a large fraction of the feed, which is a real cost driver.

What natural Graphite actually is

Mineralogically, natural Graphite is the soft, layered, electrically conductive polymorph of carbon; supplied as flake, vein (lump) or microcrystalline (misleadingly called amorphous) — C, crystallising in the hexagonal system.

The colour is caused by iron-black to steel-grey with a metallic lustre and a black streak; greasy to the touch. That is worth knowing because it determines what heating, light and time can and cannot do to the stone.

A refractometer gives nothing, because the material is opaque, and the specific gravity sits near 2.09-2.23; cleavage is perfect basal - the reason it lubricates and the reason a pencil writes.

Where natural Graphite comes from

The recognised sources are Heilongjiang, Shandong and Inner Mongolia, China - dominant world production, Balama, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique (Syrah Resources), Ampanihy and Antsirabe, Madagascar, Lac Knife and Lac des Iles, Quebec, Canada, Bogala and Kahatagaha, Sri Lanka (the world's only vein graphite) and Tanzania and Brazil.

Origin affects price in this material, so we name the locality on every quote rather than the country. "African" or "Asian" tells a buyer nothing.

How natural Graphite is treated

Flotation-concentrated, then for battery use micronised, spheroidised and coated - spherical graphite for anodes wastes a large fraction of the feed, which is a real cost driver. Uses: refractories and crucibles (historically the largest), lithium-ion battery anodes (now the growth driver), brake linings, foundry facings, lubricants, expandable graphite flame retardants, and pencils. STRATEGIC: China imposed export controls on graphite items in December 2023 and tightened them subsequently, and graphite is on the critical raw materials lists of the EU, USA and others. Synthetic graphite from petroleum needle coke is the competing product and is far more energy-intensive.

None of this is a problem when it is said out loud. It becomes one the moment it is left out.

What natural Graphite is confused with

The usual confusions are Synthetic graphite (from needle coke), Molybdenite (very similar look and feel, much heavier), Coal and anthracite and Shungite.

Because the material is opaque, refractive index is no help. Specific gravity around 2.09-2.23, hardness of 1-2, streak and magnification do the work instead.

What natural Graphite is used for

Natural Graphite is bought by heavy industry and abrasives — and each of those trades wants a different form of the same material.

We quote each application in the unit that trade actually buys in, by the tonne.

Durability and care

Natural Graphite is 1-2 on the Mohs scale, with perfect basal - the reason it lubricates and the reason a pencil writes cleavage.

Below about 5.5 a stone will be scratched by ordinary household dust, which is largely quartz. That does not make it unusable — it makes it a pendant, an earring or an object rather than a ring worn every day.

Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners on anything fracture-filled, stabilised, dyed or visibly included.

What natural Graphite costs

Indicative pricing for natural Graphite is $450-800 per tonne for large-flake concentrate; battery-grade spherical graphite $2,500-4,500 per tonne; Sri Lankan vein graphite higher.

That is a range, not a quote. Colour, size, clarity, cut and origin move the figure a long way inside it, and the only honest price is one given against a specific stone. Send us what you need and we will price it.

Questions

Is natural Graphite treated, and how?

Where does natural Graphite come from?

Heilongjiang, Shandong and Inner Mongolia, China - dominant world production, Balama, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique (Syrah Resources), Ampanihy and Antsirabe, Madagascar, Lac Knife and Lac des Iles, Quebec, Canada, Bogala and Kahatagaha, Sri Lanka (the world's only vein graphite) and Tanzania and Brazil. Origin affects price, so we name the locality rather than the country on every quote.

Is natural Graphite hard enough to wear every day?

Not really. At 1-2 on the Mohs scale it is softer than the quartz dust in ordinary household dirt, so it scratches with wear. It suits pendants, earrings and objects better than a daily ring.

How much does natural Graphite cost?

Indicatively $450-800 per tonne for large-flake concentrate; battery-grade spherical graphite $2,500-4,500 per tonne; Sri Lankan vein graphite higher. Colour, size, clarity and origin move the price a long way within that, so treat it as a range and ask for a quote against a specific stone.

What is natural Graphite confused with?

Most often Synthetic graphite (from needle coke), Molybdenite (very similar look and feel, much heavier), Coal and anthracite and Shungite. Since the material is opaque, separation relies on specific gravity near 2.09-2.23, hardness and magnification.
