The facts
What abalone Shell actually is
Mineralogically, abalone Shell is nacreous shell of Haliotis species - the most strongly iridescent natural nacre — Aragonite CaCO3 platelets in conchiolin, crystallising in the aggregate (orthorhombic aragonite) system.
The colour is caused by thin-film interference across unusually regular thick aragonite platelets, producing blue-green-violet play. That is worth knowing because it determines what heating, light and time can and cannot do to the stone.
A refractometer reads 1.52-1.69, and the specific gravity sits near 2.60-2.85; cleavage is none; parts along layers.
Where abalone Shell comes from
The recognised sources are Haliotis iris (paua), Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands, New Zealand, Haliotis rufescens, Monterey and Mendocino, California, USA, Haliotis midae, Overberg coast, South Africa and Haliotis discus hannai, Hokkaido, Japan (aquacultured).
Origin affects price in this material, so we name the locality on every quote rather than the country. "African" or "Asian" tells a buyer nothing.
How abalone Shell is treated
Frequently backed, resin-stabilised or laminated for inlay; 'paua triplets' are assembled. New Zealand prohibits commercial export of unworked paua shell and limits recreational collection - buy worked or certified material. South African H. midae is subject to severe poaching, a licensed quota far below illegal take, and a CoP20 (2025) Appendix II proposal for dried specimens; South African shell provenance deserves scrutiny. Californian wild red abalone fishery is closed.
None of this is a problem when it is said out loud. It becomes one the moment it is left out.
What abalone Shell is confused with
The usual confusions are Dyed mother-of-pearl, Printed and coated plastic inlay and Ammolite (which it genuinely resembles).
The separation is rarely a matter of opinion: refractive index 1.52-1.69 and specific gravity 2.60-2.85 settle most of it in a minute, and magnification settles the rest.
What abalone Shell is used for
Abalone Shell is bought by jewellery, decorative objects, architecture and interiors and carving and sculpture — and each of those trades wants a different form of the same material.
We quote each application in the unit that trade actually buys in, by the carat, by the piece or by the square metre.
Durability and care
Hardness 2.5-4; cleavage none; parts along layers. That combination decides what it can safely be set into.
Below about 5.5 a stone will be scratched by ordinary household dust, which is largely quartz. That does not make it unusable — it makes it a pendant, an earring or an object rather than a ring worn every day.
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners on anything fracture-filled, stabilised, dyed or visibly included.
What abalone Shell costs
Indicative pricing for abalone Shell is $5-80 per whole shell; cut inlay blanks $1-15 each.
That is a range, not a quote. Colour, size, clarity, cut and origin move the figure a long way inside it, and the only honest price is one given against a specific stone. Send us what you need and we will price it.
Questions
Is abalone Shell treated, and how?
Frequently backed, resin-stabilised or laminated for inlay; 'paua triplets' are assembled. New Zealand prohibits commercial export of unworked paua shell and limits recreational collection - buy worked or certified material. South African H. midae is subject to severe poaching, a licensed quota far below illegal take, and a CoP20 (2025) Appendix II proposal for dried specimens; South African shell provenance deserves scrutiny. Californian wild red abalone fishery is closed.
Where does abalone Shell come from?
Haliotis iris (paua), Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands, New Zealand, Haliotis rufescens, Monterey and Mendocino, California, USA, Haliotis midae, Overberg coast, South Africa and Haliotis discus hannai, Hokkaido, Japan (aquacultured). Origin affects price, so we name the locality rather than the country on every quote.
Is abalone Shell hard enough to wear every day?
Not really. At 2.5-4 on the Mohs scale it is softer than the quartz dust in ordinary household dirt, so it scratches with wear. It suits pendants, earrings and objects better than a daily ring.
How much does abalone Shell cost?
Indicatively $5-80 per whole shell; cut inlay blanks $1-15 each. Colour, size, clarity and origin move the price a long way within that, so treat it as a range and ask for a quote against a specific stone.
What is abalone Shell confused with?
Most often Dyed mother-of-pearl, Printed and coated plastic inlay and Ammolite (which it genuinely resembles). A refractive index of 1.52-1.69 and a specific gravity near 2.60-2.85 separate it quickly.
What is abalone Shell used for besides jewellery?
decorative objects, architecture and interiors and carving and sculpture. Each of those trades buys it in a different form and a different unit.
