Paraíba tourmaline is elbaite coloured by copper and manganese, in a defined range from electric blue through blue-green to green. It is a trade definition rather than a mineral variety, and it is deliberately independent of origin: material from Mozambique and Nigeria qualifies exactly as Brazilian does.
What is Paraíba tourmaline?
Paraíba tourmaline is elbaite coloured mainly by copper and manganese, in a range running from electric blue through bluish green to green and yellowish green, at medium-light to high saturation. It is a definition agreed between the major laboratories — not a mineral species — and it applies to material of any geographical origin.
Two consequences follow, and both are routinely ignored in the trade. A mint or neon green cuprian elbaite is a Paraíba, fully and correctly named. And a stone without copper confirmed by chemical analysis is not one, however electric it looks. The full colour argument is set out on the tourmaline colour page.
Where the name stops
Copper is necessary but not sufficient, and the standard sets two limits that most sellers never mention. Tourmaline with only traces of copper, or with saturation below the defined range, is excluded even though the chemistry shows copper. A pale washed stone with a copper reading does not qualify.
The second limit is technical and almost never quoted. Iron-rich copper-bearing tourmaline whose polarised o-ray spectrum shows the 700 nanometre band higher than the 900 nanometre copper band is excluded by name. In plain terms: if iron is doing more of the work than copper, the stone is a tourmaline that happens to contain copper. That single criterion separates a genuine cuprian gem from the green material sold at its price.
Why does Paraíba tourmaline glow?
The glow is measurable behaviour, not a figure of speech: the stone returns a narrow, nearly single colour and keeps returning it as the light around it falls. Divalent copper absorbs broadly in the red and near infrared, with bands near 700 and 900 nanometres, leaving the blue-green almost untouched.
What reaches the eye is a clean transmission window with very little of the grey that iron introduces into other gems. That absence of grey is what reads as neon, and it is why a fine cuprian stone holds its colour in shade while ordinary saturated tourmaline goes flat and dark.
What heating does, and why the trade accepts it
Manganese decides where in the range the stone lands. Trivalent manganese absorbs near 515 nanometres and adds a violet component, which is why much material comes out of the ground purple. Low-temperature heating converts it to divalent manganese, which barely absorbs in the visible at all.
The 515 nanometre band disappears, the copper bands stay exactly where they were, and the stone moves to blue or blue-green. The treatment removes an absorption rather than adding a colour — which is the reason it is accepted, is generally not determinable, and does not damage value.
Where does Paraíba tourmaline come from?
Three countries produce it commercially. The Batalha mine at São José da Batalha, in Paraíba state, produced the original material from 1989 and is effectively exhausted; what circulates is old stock. Nigeria followed from around 2001, chiefly in the Oyo State pegmatites. Mozambique — Mavuco, in the Alto Ligonha district — has been the dominant commercial source since about 2005.
Habit gives a first clue. Brazilian material is typically small and heavily included, occasionally containing platelets of native copper. Mozambican material is alluvial, cleaner, and comes in larger sizes: a clean cuprian stone over five carats is almost certainly African. Laboratories separate the three by trace elements, with gallium, germanium and lead running higher in Nigerian material and magnesium and zinc higher in Brazilian.
How much is Paraíba tourmaline worth?
Saturation and the neon effect set the price first, then size, then origin, then clarity. Electric blue commands a large premium over green, and Brazilian origin a further premium of several times over African material of the same appearance.
Because the gap between an ordinary blue tourmaline and a certified Paraíba runs to one or two orders of magnitude, this is one of the very few stones where the laboratory report is most of what you are buying. A stone offered at a price that makes sense for fine tourmaline is not a Paraíba; in this market, an affordable price is itself a diagnosis.
How to tell a Paraíba from a very good blue tourmaline
One field test is worth doing and one instrument is worth ignoring. Take the stone out of the display lighting into shade: cuprian material keeps glowing, ordinary indicolite goes dark. That separates candidates from wishful thinking in seconds, though it proves nothing on its own.
The refractometer will not help. Every gem tourmaline reads 1.619 to 1.655 with a birefringence around 0.018 and a specific gravity near 3.06, because they are all the same species. What instruments do achieve is excluding the imitators — neon blue apatite, which looks remarkably similar, has a birefringence of 0.002 to 0.004 and gives itself away immediately.
Only chemistry settles it: EDXRF for the presence of copper, LA-ICP-MS for quantities and for origin.
What this means if you are buying
Judge in shade before anything else is discussed. Then insist on a report from a first-tier laboratory — GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, GRS or AGL — that names cuprian elbaite, confirms copper by chemistry, and states the origin.
Until you hold that report, price the stone as ordinary tourmaline and treat a copper confirmation as upside rather than as a premise. In a market where the name is worth a hundred times the material, the premise is exactly what gets sold to you.

Can Paraíba tourmaline be green?
Yes. The laboratory definition explicitly covers bluish green, greenish blue, green and yellowish green as well as blue. Green cuprian elbaite, most of it from Mozambique, is correctly called Paraíba. What differs from blue is the price, which is substantially lower, not the legitimacy of the name.
Is Paraíba tourmaline heated?
Nearly always. Low-temperature heating converts trivalent manganese to divalent, removing the violet component and opening up the blue. It is accepted throughout the trade, is generally not determinable, and does not damage value. A seller claiming a stone is definitely unheated without a report is claiming something they cannot know.
How do you test for copper in tourmaline?
Only by chemical analysis — EDXRF for presence, LA-ICP-MS for quantities and trace elements. Refractive index, specific gravity and birefringence are identical across all gem tourmaline, so standard instruments identify the species but can never distinguish a Paraíba from an ordinary blue stone.
Why is Brazilian Paraíba more expensive?
The original Batalha deposit is effectively exhausted and produced very little, so Brazilian material is scarce and carries a premium of several times over African stones of similar appearance. The premium attaches to the origin line on a laboratory report, determined by trace-element chemistry.
How much does Paraíba tourmaline cost?
There is no reliable public listing, and the range is enormous. Fine Mozambican material trades in the thousands to low tens of thousands per carat; exceptional Brazilian stones go far higher; pale cuprian material sells in the hundreds. Price tracks saturation and the neon effect before it tracks size.
