Padparadscha is a variety of corundum — the same mineral as ruby and sapphire — defined by a delicate mixture of pink and orange at pastel tones and low to medium saturation. The colour comes from chromium and iron acting together. Sri Lanka is the classical source, though the definition itself is origin-blind.

What makes a sapphire a padparadscha

The definition agreed between the major laboratories describes corundum of any geographical origin whose colour in daylight is a subtle mixture of pink-orange to orange-pink, at pastel tones and low to medium saturation. Both components must be present, and neither may dominate.

Two things are hidden in that sentence, and both are routinely missed. The first is that the name is not tied to Sri Lanka: material from Madagascar and Tanzania qualifies on the same terms, whatever the trade prefers to believe. The second is stranger. This is the one important gem where delicacy is the requirement. A pink-orange sapphire that is too saturated is not a superior padparadscha — it is not a padparadscha at all, and drops back to being a fancy sapphire worth a fraction.

Buyers trained on ruby and blue sapphire consistently err in the same direction, reaching for the more intense stone and paying a premium for the thing that disqualifies it.

Where the pink and the orange come from

The combination is unusual, which is most of the reason the stone is rare. Chromium supplies the pink — the same ion that makes a ruby red, present in a smaller amount. The orange component comes partly from iron and, in much Sri Lankan material, from colour centres: lattice defects that trap charge and absorb light without any extra element being involved.

That second mechanism is the source of the first real buying risk.

Why the colour can fade, and what a fade test is

Where the orange comes from colour centres rather than from iron, it can be unstable. Prolonged exposure to light or heat can bleach it, leaving a stone that is pinker than the one you bought, and irradiation can sometimes restore it. A stone that fades is still corundum, still hard, still beautiful — but it is no longer the variety you paid for.

Serious laboratories therefore run a fade test, exposing the stone under controlled conditions and reporting whether the colour holds. Experienced buyers ask for it by name. If a report on an expensive padparadscha says nothing about stability, that silence is information.

Beryllium diffusion, and why the report matters more here than almost anywhere

Since the early 2000s, high-temperature diffusion with beryllium has been used to produce exactly this pink-orange from ordinary, cheap corundum. The treatment penetrates deeply, it is permanent, and it is invisible to standard gemmological instruments. It is detected only by trace-element chemistry — LA-ICP-MS or LIBS — which means a laboratory, and not just any laboratory.

The practical consequence is blunt: on padparadscha, a report that does not explicitly address beryllium is not worth the paper. Ask for GIA, SSEF, Gübelin or AGL, and read the treatment line before the origin line.

Origin, and what it does to the price

Sri Lanka carries a substantial premium, and the trade defends it fiercely even though the definition does not require it. Madagascar — chiefly Ilakaka — and Tanzania produce material that meets the definition and sells for less at comparable appearance.

Whether that premium is rational is a separate question from whether it is real. It is real, it is large, and it is why the origin line on the report is worth commissioning on any stone above a carat or two.

What determines the price

In order of weight: the balance of the colour first, then whether the stone is unheated, then the origin, then the size. The gap between a heated stone and an untreated one of the same appearance is commonly three to five times. Above two carats the curve steepens sharply; above five it becomes a collector's market.

Record results give the scale. A 10.39-carat unheated Sri Lankan padparadscha reached over 800,000 dollars at Christie's in 2023, and the 24.58-carat Du Pont padparadscha sold for 930,000 dollars in 2020 — a lower figure per carat than the smaller stone, which tells you how completely colour outranks weight here.

What this means if you are buying

Judge the colour in daylight, not under shop lighting, and be suspicious of your own instinct to prefer the more saturated stone. Ask for a first-tier report that names the variety, states the treatment, addresses beryllium explicitly, and reports a fade test. Until you have that, price the stone as a fancy pink-orange sapphire — because that is what it is until a laboratory says otherwise.

Why is padparadscha so expensive?

The colour requires chromium and iron in an unusually narrow balance, so very little corundum falls inside the definition. Add the premium for untreated material and for Sri Lankan origin, and fine stones over two carats reach five figures per carat, with exceptional pieces going far higher.
