Aquamarine

Beryl · also called Blue beryl, Santa Maria

Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of beryl, the same species as emerald, coloured by iron. Unlike emerald it grows clean and large, so fine stones of twenty carats and more are ordinary rather than exceptional — and almost all of it on the market has been heated to remove a yellow component.

What is aquamarine?

Aquamarine is beryl coloured blue by iron — the same mineral species as emerald, morganite and heliodor, differing only in which trace element it took up. Beryllium aluminium silicate, hexagonal, hard at 7.5 to 8, and unusually well behaved in the ground.

That last quality is what separates it commercially from emerald. Emerald forms in a violent chemical environment and comes out fractured; aquamarine grows in pegmatites in large, clean, well-formed crystals. Clean twenty-carat aquamarines are ordinary. Clean twenty-carat emeralds are museum pieces.

What gives aquamarine its colour?

Iron in two different states, doing two different things. Ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) produces the blue. Ferric iron (Fe³⁺) produces a yellow to greenish component. Most rough contains both, which is why so much material comes out of the ground a greenish sea colour rather than pure blue.

Heating to a few hundred degrees converts the ferric iron and removes the yellow, leaving the blue behind. This is why almost every aquamarine on the market is heated, and why the pure blue you see in shops is rarer in nature than in trays.

Is aquamarine heated?

Almost always, and the honest description says so. Low-temperature heating is near-universal, permanent, and not determinable by any test — so a laboratory will typically report that treatment cannot be established rather than certifying a stone as unheated.

Unheated material of genuinely fine blue exists and commands a premium among collectors, but it needs documentation from the mine or a very well-established chain to be worth paying for. A seller asserting an unheated aquamarine without such a chain is asserting something they cannot demonstrate.

One historic exception is worth knowing: Maxixe beryl, a deep blue material from Brazil, owes its colour to an unstable colour centre and fades in light. It is rare in commerce now, but a suspiciously deep blue aquamarine at a suspiciously good price deserves the question.

What does Santa Maria mean?

It began as a locality — the Santa Maria de Itabira mine in Minas Gerais, which produced aquamarine of an exceptionally deep, slightly greyish-blue colour. Over time the trade turned it into a colour grade rather than an origin.

Today material from Mozambique of comparable saturation is sold as Santa Maria Africana, and plenty of stones described simply as Santa Maria come from neither place. This is not fraud in the way a mislabelled Paraíba is fraud, but it is imprecision, and a buyer should read the term as a claim about colour and nothing more. If origin matters to you, ask for it separately.

How is aquamarine identified?

Aquamarine reads 1.567 to 1.590 with a low birefringence of 0.005 to 0.007 and a specific gravity between 2.66 and 2.80. It is uniaxial negative, and its pleochroism is distinct — near-colourless in one direction and blue in the other, which is why cutters orient the table perpendicular to the c-axis to capture the strongest colour.

The stones it is confused with separate easily. Blue topaz reads 1.609 to 1.643 with a higher specific gravity of 3.5. Blue zircon is far higher on both counts and shows obvious doubling. Glass is singly refractive. Blue spinel is singly refractive and reads 1.718.

Where does aquamarine come from?

Brazil remains the classical source, with Minas Gerais producing across a wide range of quality and the historic Santa Maria and Marambaia mines setting the colour references.

Mozambique has become a major supplier of deeply coloured material. Pakistan, particularly Shigar and the Gilgit-Baltistan valleys, produces superb crystals prized as much for their form as for cutting. Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia and Namibia all contribute. The Erongo region of Namibia yields sharply terminated crystals that mostly go to collectors.

Where the name comes from

From the Latin *aqua marina*, sea water — a description of the colour that has been attached to the stone since antiquity, when it was carried by sailors as a protection against drowning.

The mineral itself is unremarkable in history compared to emerald, its own sibling, largely because it was too available to become a symbol of power. Its modern position was made in the twentieth century, when Brazilian production and Art Deco design found each other: the large, clean, cool-blue rectangular step cut is essentially an aquamarine invention.

What sizes are available?

Large ones, easily. This is the practical advantage of the species and the reason it appears in statement jewellery so often. Clean stones of ten, twenty and fifty carats are readily available, and hundred-carat stones are a normal item rather than a sensation.

The Dom Pedro, a carved obelisk of over ten thousand carats, is the extreme illustration. For a buyer the consequence is that size costs relatively little here: the per-carat price rises far more gently with weight than in scarce species, so a large aquamarine is one of the few ways to own a genuinely impressive stone at a modest price.

How much is aquamarine worth?

Colour, and almost nothing else. The premium goes to deep, saturated blue without a green cast — the Santa Maria description — and the drop from that to ordinary pale sea-blue material is steep, on the order of ten times or more.

Clarity should be excellent, because the species grows clean and buyers rightly expect it; visible inclusions are a real fault here in a way they are not in emerald. Cut matters because of the pleochroism, and a poorly oriented stone will look washed out however good the rough was. Size, as noted, adds less than in most gems.

Is aquamarine durable enough to wear?

Yes, and it is among the better choices for daily jewellery. At 7.5 to 8 it resists scratching well, and its toughness is good.

The one caution is the basal cleavage, which is imperfect but real: a sharp knock in the wrong direction can start a break, particularly in a large stone with a thin girdle. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning on stones with visible feathers, and keep it away from prolonged high heat, which can alter the colour it was heated to produce.

How to buy aquamarine without being caught out

Judge colour in a large stone, not a small one. Aquamarine is pale by nature and colour deepens with the path length light travels, so a five-carat stone will always look bluer than a one-carat of identical material. Comparing across sizes is how buyers talk themselves into overpaying.

Look at the stone face-down on white paper. Pleochroism and shallow cutting both hide there, and a stone that is impressive face-up and near-colourless from behind has been cut for the tray.

Treat Santa Maria as a colour claim, not an origin, and ask for origin separately if it matters. And assume heating unless a credible chain says otherwise — it is universal, accepted, and not something to pay a premium to avoid without documentation.

Does aquamarine fade?
